Emily’s Story

Pacific Northwest artist Emily Mogren holds a BA in Illustration from Seattle Pacific University and is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). She works in both digital and traditional media, with fine art created in acrylic or oil on wood panel. Using a colorful living palette of her own garden, Emily is currently developing a series of paintings inspired by the flowers and hummingbirds in her own garden - celebrating both their beauty and resilience.

Painting Inspiration

After encountering hummingbirds while gardening, Emily recreates the magical moment with a hummingbird by taking reference photos of the plants and filling her art studio with jars of flowers from her garden to guide her as she paints.

Her painting Black Beauty Sunflower won the Woodinville Garden Club’s Tour of Gardens Art Award. Black Beauty Sunflower features the dark red variety of sunflower called Black Beauty and the pink and yellow variations of cosmos called Apricot Lemonade. Both are happily enjoyed by the hummingbirds who share the space in her vibrant garden.

Through her work, Emily captures the rhythms of nature where blooming and decay coexist - capturing themes of joy, loss, and everyday wonder.
